New Mexico Economic Development Cabinet Secretary Jon Barela announced that Federal Rated Security Technologies (FRST) will be relocating its Dallas Metroplex operations to Alamogordo. The announcement was made during the Otero County Economic Development Council (OCEDC) annual meeting. FRST expects to create 15 to 20 high-wage jobs in its first year and an additional 50 jobs by the end of its second year in Alamogordo.
“We are excited for the work that will take place in Alamogordo that will lead to regional growth and create high-wage jobs,” Barela said. “We intend to continue to work with the high tech industry to bring more jobs and companies to New Mexico and the Alamogordo high tech cluster.”
FRST will focus on the emerging market for dual mode, manned or unmanned operation, utility vehicles for security, military and emergency management operations. FRST is working with a nationwide supplier network to provide key commercial off-the-shelf components to enable the development of an economical solution and accelerate their entry into the market place. Over the next several months, FRST will be finalizing the product design in consultation with its customers to ensure critical operational capabilities are met. The Alamogordo facility will serve as the hub for FRST’s product design, integration, manufacturing and test operations. It is anticipated the facility will serve to attract additional industry partners to Alamogordo as operations grow and manufacturing begins.
Army Network Integration Evaluation Brings 2,000 Testers to Area
Release courtesy of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce
Las Cruces, NM, May 30, 2011 – Beginning on Monday, June 26, the United States Army will begin large-scale testing of 30 different systems and networks at White Sands Missile Range and Fort Bliss. The Network Integration Evaluation (NIE), as it is known, will bring together 3,800 soldiers from Fort Bliss’ 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division with 2,000 soldiers, government employees and contract personnel from WSMR, Fort Bliss, Fort Hood and other installations.
Army agencies will test and evaluate the 30 different systems while the soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division use the systems in various tactical scenarios throughout WSMR and Fort Bliss. The testing operations will take place 24 hours per day Monday through Friday each week. During the weekend, Fort Bliss soldiers will return home, however, the majority of the 2,000 testers and evaluators will remain in area hotels.
Because of the influx of military and contract personnel, the communities of Las Cruces, El Paso and Alamogordo can expect increased business in area hotels, rental car companies, restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores, as well as an increase in business to businesses such as FedEx Office and copy centers around the WSMR area. The testing and evaluation will also cause an increase in military vehicle traffic on the roads between WSMR and Fort Bliss and an increase in regular vehicle traffic around the WSMR entrance points and Las Cruces.
The NIE will run through July 15. The Department of Defense plans to host the NIE on a semi-annual basis in the future. For more information about the NIE, contact the WSMR Public Affairs Office at 678-1134.

Spaceport Authority Accepts Landeene Resignation

Spaceport America officials met Wednesday to formally accept the resignation of Spaceport Authority Director Steve Landeene.
After a closed-door meeting, they also appointed board Chairman Fred Mondragon, based in Santa Fe, to act as executive director until a replacement is named. Mondragon, also state economic development secretary, said he’ll spend two to three days a week in Las Cruces or Truth or Consequences while in the role.
The board granted another of its members, Ben Woods, who’s also a New Mexico State University official, authority to sign documents on Mondragon’s behalf, if Mondragon isn’t able to. Woods said the board will meet again within the next week or two to decide its next steps.
Landeene, 47, served as executive director since January 2008. The Economic Development Department announced his resignation in a news release Friday. Landeene has cited family reasons as the motivation for his decision.
Landeene earns $155,546 annually, said Michael Moxey, spokesman for the New Mexico Economic Development Department. He’ll be paid through May 14, though officials have said he’s only working in an advisory capacity until then.
Spaceport Authority board members Kent Evans and Woods were physically present at the meeting, while members Toots Green of Alamogordo, James Manatt of Roswell, Casey Luna of Belen and Gary White of Truth or Consequences attended by phone.
The spaceport authority oversees the state-owned Spaceport America, a $198 million future launch site for commercial space vehicles that’s under-construction in southeastern Sierra County.
SunZia Transmission Project Announces Local Public Meetings
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is holding additional public scoping meetings to seek input and discuss with the public a proposed study expansion area for the SunZia Southwest Transmission Project.
Three open-house public scoping meetings along the expanded study area will be held in the following New Mexico communities. All meetings will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Las Cruces, October 26, 2009 – Court Youth Center, 402 West Court
Alamogordo, October 27, 2009 -First National Bank, 414 Tenth Street
Chaparral, October 28, 2009 -Chaparral High School, 800 County Line Drive
The project is a proposed 460 mile high capacity 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission line (or two parallel lines) across New Mexico and Arizona. The project proponent, SunZia Transmission LLC, is proposing to transport electricity generated by power generation resources, including primarily renewable resources, to western power markets and load centers. The BLM is the lead Federal agency which will oversee the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that will identify environmental impacts and evaluate alternatives for the project.
Numerous comments during the initial public scoping meetings included requests to consider alternative routes. Suggested transmission line corridors for consideration in New Mexico are potential routes south of the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in Dona Ana County and along the eastern boundary of the WSMR in Otero and Lincoln counties. These corridors in the New Mexico area could provide alternative routes between the Midpoint Substation site near Deming, and the proposed SunZia-East Substation termination site in Lincoln County
A map of the proposed expansion area and more information regarding the project are available on BLM-SunZia Transmission Line Project website.
