On November 11 through 13, 2009, the International Business Accelerator (IBA) and the Office of Mexican Affairs & Trade (OMA) organized an outbound trade mission to Juarez, Mexico. The purpose of the trade mission was to promote New Mexico exports by introducing qualified industrial suppliers to industrial buyers from the maquiladora industry, located in Juarez.

The IBA, OMA, the City of Juarez Economic Development Association, and the State of Chihuahua Industrial Development Department worked together to match the participating New Mexican suppliers’ outputs with the demand interests of the participating maquiladora purchasing managers.

The New Mexico companies that participated in this event included:

• Omega Trucking
• Bralco Metals
• Sun Automation
• Monarch Litho
• Georgia Pacific
• Southwest Dowel & Wood Products, LLC
• Albuquerque Printing

These companies had the opportunity to meet with several maquiladora buyers during a series of pre-qualified interviews arranged by the organizers. Each interview had duration of up to thirty minutes. The companies that participated from the Juarez maquiladora purchasing industrial sector included: Crayola, Bosch, ADC, Delphi, Tyco, Strattec- Security, Larco, Matrix Wire, Bell Manufacturing, Radial, Toro, Labinal, Tatung, Lexmark, Del Real, Cardinal Health, Covidien, and Inventec.

The New Mexico suppliers are currently working on production quotes and are conducting follow-up with these companies.

The 16th Annual NAFTA Institute “Supplier Meet the Buyer” Trade Conference attracted record crowds to Sunland Park, New Mexico on June 11-12. The event, held at the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, began with business-to-business roundtables between over 250 suppliers and buyers from 43 maquiladoras such as Foxconn, Delphi, Bombardier, Toro, Sumitomo, ADC Telecommunications and Electrolux. An additional 300 small businesses attended the event to promote their products in the small business B2B sessions and to learn about cross-border trade.

On the following day, attendees heard from experts on a variety of issues ranging from border security to rail shipping to financing issues. There were also presentations regarding Foxconn’s San Jeronimo project, Union Pacific’s Santa Teresa rail relocation project, and the Punta Colonet port project.

The annual event is organized by the International Business Accelerator (IBA). Additional event hosts for 2009 included the New Mexico Economic Development Department Office of Mexican Affairs, The North American Institute (NAMI), the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance, Gobierno Municipal De Juarez, Western New Mexico University and the New Mexico Small Business Development Center (NMSBDC).
