With a building as futuristic as the company itself, Virgin Galactic selected the Green Offices to house its Las Cruces headquarters. John Hummer, owner and Broker of Steinborn & Associates Real Estate , said Jacob Garland, associate broker with Steinborn, represented the project. The office will be located in the new Green Offices, 166 S. Roadrunner Parkway.

“Virgin began their office search back in May,” Garland said. “They looked at numerous locations throughout the city, and after much consideration, the team decided the Green Offices would be the best site for their Las Cruces headquarters.” Garland said construction has already commenced on the interior build-out, and the company’s goal is to occupy the space around the beginning 2012.

The office complex is the first privately funded professional office building built in New Mexico using LEED certification standards.

“Virgin Galactic is leasing approximately 2,000 square feet on the upper level,” Garland said. “They worked with a local architect to design the interior of the suite, which will be somewhat futuristic to stay with the Virgin Galactic theme; we are very excited to see the completed product.”

Virgin Galactic is an innovative company within Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. Virgin Galactic is the world’s first space line giving individuals the groundbreaking opportunity to become one of the first ever non-professional astronauts.

Virgin Galactic will own and operate its privately built spaceships – WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo – from Spaceport America, which is located northwest of Las Cruces.

“Virgin Galactic’s commitment to this location is a positive example of Spaceport America’s promise of new growth and development in our community,” Hummer said.

“The entire team at Virgin Galactic has been excellent to work with throughout the entire process, they will be a great asset to the community,” Garland said.

Steinborn also represented the developer and owner of the Green Offices. The offices of the state-of-the-art, first of its kind, new professional office building consists of 18,000 square feet and was built to LEED certification standards. It is expected to receive Platinum LEED Certification – the highest LEED designation – upon final completion.

UPHAM, NM – Virgin Galactic and sister aerospace production company The Spaceship Company (TSC) has announced that they will co-host the first-ever “Industry Day” in cooperation with the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) at Spaceport America on Tuesday, October 18. The NMSA said that the Industry Day event, which is by Virgin Galactic invitation only, is designed to educate potential suppliers on the type of goods and services that will be needed by the two companies as commercial space travel becomes a reality in New Mexico.

The daylong event will include presentations by Virgin Galactic President and CEO George Whitesides; New Mexico Department of Economic Development Cabinet Secretary Jon Barela; and NMSA Executive Director Christine Anderson. Attendees will have a unique opportunity to see the WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo vehicles up close in their new home at Spaceport America.

“Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company are looking to create relationships with local, regional and global suppliers to support their operations at Spaceport America,” said Christine Anderson, NMSA Executive Director. “The organizers of this event have stated their intention to hire locally as much as possible, which is good news for New Mexico companies.” Interested suppliers are encouraged by Virgin Galactic to complete an online registration form at http://www.virgingalactic.com/news/item/virgin-galactic-industry-day/ to express their desire to attend the event and to become a Virgin Galactic and/or TSC supplier. UPHAM – Virgin Galactic’s Sir Richard Branson, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and prospective astronauts gathered in the southern New Mexico desert Friday to celebrate the completion of the runway at the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport.

Spaceport America is the world’s first facility designed specifically to launch commercial spacecraft. The celebration of its nearly-two-mile-long runway comes less than two weeks after another major step for Virgin Galactic: the first solo glide flight of its space tourism rocket ship.

Branson called it an emotional and historic day. The British billionaire said he expects flights for space tourists to begin in nine to 18 months, and he will be among the first passengers.

Stretching across a flat dusty plain 45 miles north of Las Cruces, the runway is designed to support almost every aircraft in the world, day-to-day space tourism and payload launch operations.

Virgin Galactic is the anchor tenant of the taxpayer-funded spaceport and plans to use the facility to take tourists on what will first be short hops into space. State officials want to add companies for other commercial space endeavors, such as research and payload delivery missions.

Virgin Galactic’s White Knight Two – the special jet-powered mothership that will carry SpaceShipTwo to launch altitude – also made an appearance Friday, passing over the spaceport several times before landing on the new runway.

Tickets for suborbital space rides aboard SpaceShipTwo cost $200,000. The 2½-hour flights will include about five minutes of weightlessness. Some 380 customers have already made deposits totaling more than $50 million, Virgin Galactic officials said Friday.

Branson, the president of Virgin Group, which counts airlines, entertainment and mobile communications among its businesses, partnered with famed aviation designer Burt Rutan on the venture.

Until now, space travel has been limited to astronauts and a handful of wealthy people who have shelled out millions to ride Russian rockets to the international space station.

Some of the soon-to-be astronauts attended Friday’s runway dedication.

While space tourism projects such as Virgin Galactic’s venture receive plenty of publicity, the commercial space industry is seeing rapid developments with companies like SpaceX of Hawthorne, Calif., seeking to win NASA work to supply the International Space Station.

SpaceX has successfully placed a dummy payload into orbit and has contracts to lift satellites next. Other firms, including Masten Space Systems of Mojave, Calif., and Armadillo Aerospace of Rockwell, Texas, are testing systems that would carry unmanned payloads to space.

Last month, Congress approved legislation that affirms President Barack Obama’s intent to use commercial carriers to lift humans into near-Earth space.

Las Cruces, New Mexico artist, Virginia Maria Romero, was commissioned to provide the gift presented to Virgin Galactic representatives, by the New Mexico Amigos, during the Amigos recent tour of Virgin Galactic’s facility at the Mojave Spaceport in California.  The New Mexico Amigos, made up of civic and business leaders from around the state, serve as official goodwill ambassadors for New Mexico.
