Regional Advantages

Dona Ana County and southern New Mexico offer unlimited opportunities for business location and expansion. Las Cruces, the state’s second largest city and county seat, is located in the middle Rio Grande River basin, less than an hour’s drive from El Paso, Texas and the Mexican border. It offers a superb quality of life with over 330 days of sunshine, a multitude of recreational and cultural activities and a competitive cost of living.

Due to its location in the southwest, Dona Ana County offers easy access to Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico and the West Coast via two interstate highways, two railroads and three area airports.

The workforce of the region is young, dynamic and growing. According to a 2005 Labor Market Assessment by the Wadley-Donovan Group, Dona Ana County’s population between the ages of 20 and 34 will increase 14% between 2004 and 2009. Its labor force grew by 13% between 1998 and 2003.

World class education and training facilities are available at New Mexico State University and Dona Ana Community College. New Mexico State has a nationally recognized College of Engineering and College of Business. Dona Ana Community College offers technical and customized training programs at six branch campuses and education centers.

Overall business operating costs are lower in Dona Ana County than national averages. Labor costs are from 6% to 23% lower, with the median of all occupation being 18% lower than the U.S. average. Construction costs are an average of 10% lower and property tax rates are among the lowest in the nation.

A number of developed industrial parks are located throughout Dona Ana County and others are in the planning stages. Eight-miles west of downtown Las Cruces, the West Mesa Industrial Park is attracting a number of light manufacturing and aerospace companies to support the development of Spaceport America. The two industrial parks in Santa Teresa support a number of manufacturing companies supplying the maquila plants in Juarez and north-central Mexico.
