Transportation

transportation-map-graphic-Las Cruces and Dona Ana County are ideally situated in the Southwest to solve many logistics issues. Due to its southern geographic location and temperate year-round climate, few weather-related transportation delays are experienced.

Las Cruces is situated at the intersection of two major Interstate highways. Interstate-10 is a major east-west artery stretching from the southeastern U.S. to the West Coast. Interstate-10 connects to the Santa Teresa Port of Entry and Mexican Highways 2 and 45 via the Pete Domenici Highway (NM 375). Interstate-25, originating in Las Cruces, is a major north-south artery stretching to the Canadian border.

Dona Ana County is served by both the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) (north-south) and the Union Pacific-Southern Pacific Railroad (UPSP) (east-west). The Union Pacific is currently developing a new terminal at Santa Teresa, designed to handle 100,000 containers per year.

Las Cruces and Dona Ana County are served by three airports. Commercial passenger air service for the region is provided by the El Paso International Airport, less than one-hour drive-time from downtown Las Cruces. El Paso International is served by eight national carriers with nonstop service to fifteen cities. Cargo, charter and general aviation services are available via the Las Cruces International Airport and the Dona Ana County Airport at Santa Teresa. Foreign trade zones (FTZ) are located at both airports.

Dona Ana County is also ideally situated for the movement of goods from and to major sea ports. It is equidistant from both the Ports of Long Beach (Pacific) and Houston (Gulf of Mexico-Atlantic) and served by major rail and highway routes. Being adjacent to many of the maquilas (twin-plants) in Mexico, it offers the opportunities for increased maquila-supplier manufacturing and import-export logistics support functions.
