Spaceport America

Spaceport America, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, is nearing completion in the backyard of the New Mexico Borderplex. The $225M facility, located approximately 45 miles north of Las Cruces and 30 miles east of Truth or Consequences, will offer commercial spaceflight capabilities for a wide variety of aerospace companies. The site is approximately 28.5-square-miles (18,200 acres) of open range land with an average elevation of 4,500 ft.

Virgin Galactic is the anchor tenant in the 110,000 sq. ft. Terminal & Hangar Facility, aptly named the “Virgin Galactic Gateway to Space,” which is served by a 12,000 foot long, 200-foot wide runway and associated taxiways.

Spaceport America has been providing commercial vertical launch services since 2006. To date, there have been 17 vertical launches at the Spaceport. Customers include Armadillo Aerospace, UP Aerospace, MOOG FTS and Lockheed Martin. The Spaceport also hosts a student launch annually in concert with the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium. Last year there were over 800 students and teachers participating.  The Spaceport presents a tremendous opportunity to excite and inspire our students in science and math.

Spaceport America offers:

  • Low-cost access to space
  • Quick turnaround
  • Ideal flying weather – 340 days of sunshine per year
  • Vertical & horizontal launch capabilities
  • Clear, restricted airspace controlled by neighboring White Sands Missile Range (WSMR)
  • Average elevation of 4,500 ft. above sea level, making the first mile “free”
  • A large scientific community associated with NASA and WSMR
